Spiritual awakening in a way is like going through puberty all over again. Oh yes! Remember the awkwardness, changes in your body, mood swings, losing and making friends, and the attraction to concepts, things, and persons that you were previously oblivious to? Guess what, all of that is making a comeback in a big cosmic way.
If you are reading this, there is a big possibility that you are experiencing many changes if your life. Some subtle and some scary. Life at this moment may feel frustrating, intriguing, alarming, and confusing. Humanity as a whole is experiencing major changes. The vibration of our planet is rising, and the magnetic pull of gravity and the polar shifts are causing an impact on us.
I have broken down some of the stages of awakening and compared them to stages of puberty to simplify and explain what the heck is going on.
Changes in your body: From 3D to 5D
No matter what stage of spiritual awakening you may be in, you are very likely to be undergoing some physical, emotional, and mental changes. The most common of these are: Developing intolerance, allergies, and just plain disgust to certain dense and toxic foods like meat, dairy, processed foods, alcohol, drugs, and low vibrational people. As your vibration and frequency raises you will naturally no longer be a match to certain foods and persons in your life. You will literally not be able to digest them. By digesting people I don’t mean cannibalism. I mean tolerating and wanting to interact and socialize with persons who bring nothing towards your expansion. You will both start to wane interest in each other and drift apart.
You may experience changes in your weight and body shape. When you change your diet not only may you drop weight, but also your skin will clear. You will radiate a new kind of youthful energy. When you meditate and practice yoga, you may have that “Yoga Glow” which is caused by the release of toxins from your mind and body.
As your third eye begins to awaken (read my article What is a Third Eye and Why Should Yours Be Opened) you may experience headaches. Your DNA will begin to change, and you may experience sensitivity to light and sounds. Your two eyes will begin to see the world in a whole new way. Some days your surroundings will look ugly and cruel. Sadness and empathy might overwhelm you. Other days you will see beauty in everyone and everything. Your third eye may begin to show you colors, orbs, energies, and flashes of light.
You may feel tired and sleepy all the time. That is normal. During sleep you may begin to experience new levels of awareness. My Guru “Swamiji” Paramahamsa Nithyananda recently stated that there are 25 levels of sleep awareness. Some of the most common experiences you can have during sleep include lucid dreams, OBE (out-of-body experience), downloads (you will receive information, inspiration, and ideas), premonitory dreams, and revelations.
How can you deal with these changes? Listen to your body and consciousness. Adopt a healthy vegetarian lifestyle. Exercise and spend time in nature, or in quiet meditation. Unplug from electronics and turn off the TV. Detoxify your body trough liquid cleanses (read my article Life Beyond Food: Nirahara Samyama), take natural supplements that will boost your immune system, and decalcify your pineal gland (I take Haritaki powder every night). Drink filtered non-fluoridated water. Buy fluoride-free toothpaste (it is NOT that expensive! It is cheaper than most drinks at Starbucks).
Mood Swings: Dark night of the soul and death of the ego
Remember when you were a teen and you drove your parents crazy with your extreme moods? Well, now you will drive yourself crazy as you begin to experience a change in consciousness. Suddenly, you may experience compassion and love for all beings. Watching violence will take a toll on you. You may feel drained and lethargic after spending time in traffic and crowded public places (read my article Darkness in Spirituality: The Highs and Lows of an Empath). Some days you will wakeup highly optimistic, joyful, and ready to take on the world. Then, halfway trough the day anxiety will kick in, and you will feel small and powerless. These are all just tricks your own mind is playing on you. The ego senses changes in your awareness and feels threatened. The idea of identity is not real. You are not your psychological, physiological, neurological ups and downs (this is a powerful lesson Swamiji shared with us that has really made an impact on how I personally deal with adversity). What you perceive as happiness and sadness is just a phase. True joy and bliss will be experienced from the inside, not driven by external factors. Keep this in mind next time you are on an emotional rollercoaster.
“Dark night of the soul is the auspicious expression to bring one more enlightened being to the planet earth.” Paramahamsa Nithyananda
Relax, it is just your ego kicking and screaming like a spoiled child because it knows that you are evolving into a new self. The concept of “Dark Night Of The Soul” is a phase many individuals may go trough during awakening. You may lose relationships, jobs, material items, and feel lonely and depressed. Do not panic, everything happens for a reason. It is existence’s way of clearing the path for us. Life is auspicious and everything is aimed at our growth and expansion. The times are changing and our purpose in life is to raise our consciousness. Either you willingly evolve and enjoy the ride, or the universe will give you a big push down the rabbit hole.
Attraction to new people, places, and things
As your frequency and vibration raises you will become a match to new persons, places, and concepts. What used to seem weird and loopy (Yoga, sound baths, chakras, energy healing) may now spark a curiosity and an attraction that you just can’t resist. You may find your taste in music, art and entertainment changing dramatically. Wearing colorful clothes and accessorizing with natural woods, crystals, and gemstones may suddenly be a “thing” for you. The most notable change will be in your taste in people. You may become intrigued and fascinated by people who give off a powerful but gentle and positive vibe. You may be drawn to those who seem spiritual and knowledgeable. You might even feel a yearning for a teacher, guide or guru. When you feel lonely and misunderstood you will crave to find new friends who are into these new activities and concepts that you enjoy.
Swamiji teaches that it “is the space, not the place” that we are in that aids our expansion. When we surround ourselves with people that we are in completion with (good terms) life becomes so much more fun and joyful. The more joy and positivity that you breathe out, the more attractive you will be. More people will want to hang around you. Become a magnet for all things positive. Do not stay in a place that depresses you. Detach yourself from anyone and anything that makes you feel powerless. Radiate and express authenticity. Stay true to who you really are. Blossom with integrity.
As you continue to awaken, change, and evolve you may want to seek out guidance and direction. Listen to your inner self. You have an internal compass and your intuition will guide you to what is best for you.
